How to make stovetop popcorn without oil

I don’t watch a lot of TV in the past few years. Its not that I don’t like it, actually it is a nice escape sometimes from the real world, its just that I have very little spare time and TV is at the bottom of my priority list.

From time to time the hubby and I will get caught on a series and watch it together late nights after the girls went to bed and we finished with our night work phone meetings. Currently we are hooked up on “Orange is the new black”. I know, we are always late to the party.

When we do get around to watching TV, I like to have a snack around. I know it is a bad habit to snack in front of the TV but I don’t do it that often that its fine for me. I do prefer that the snack will be as healthy as possible. For this cause I’ll try to stick to apples, but hey, sometimes you just want something salty and warm for a snack. I am however against that store bought popcorn bags that contain added oils, preservatives, salt in unreasonable amounts and god knows what else. I like to control what goes in my popcorn.

Oil free popcorn

That’s why I did some experiments and found that you can easily make stove-top popcorn without any oil. No oil you ask? that’s right, no need for it, so why waist the calories? I’ll share with you below the method that works for me. I personally eat it plain, with just a bit of added salt. However, if you are in the mood for salted caramel popcorn, check out my vegan salted caramel popcorn recipe here.

Stove-top Popcorn without the need for oil
מאת:
סוג מתכון: Snack
מנות: one bowl
מרכיבים
  • ½ a cup popcorn kernels (amount can vary according to your pot, you'll need to place the kernels in one layer inside your pot, so according to size may need more or less kernels)
הוראות הכנה
  1. Place the popcorn kernels in one layer on the bottom of a deep pot, as shown in the picture in the post above, and close with the lid
  2. Turn on stove on medium heat
  3. Stay close to the stove as you'll need to listen to the kernels as they pop. At the beginning the popcorn will pop vigorously. When there is an interval of a second or two between the pop sounds this is the time to turn the stove off
  4. Wait a few minutes for the popcorn to cool and move it to your desired bowl

The method worked very well. Popcorn came out perfectly with no burning.
But I tried to sprinkle it with nutritional yeast and a bit of salt
That did’t work because it won’t stick to the popcorn
Falls straight to the bottom of the bowl
Wonder how one could fix this problem….

works perfectly for me, using a cast iron skillet, you just have to get it off the heat when the poppong slows down. NO OIL.

You can spray the fresh popcorn with braggs aminos, or soy sauce in a mister and then put on salt and nutritional yeast. It needs to be a little wet to have anything stick to dry popcorn.

I usually do use oil… I’m a huge fan of avocado oil and getting my food fats. But I also count my macros for performance reasons and sometimes I am out of “fat” macros and still want popcorn. I take a spritzer to get it slightly damp with just water and then put the salt on. The dampness makes it stick. (Although I’m way happier when I have fat macros left and can pop it in oil)….

Dip your fingers in a little bit of water and then mix the popcorn around in the bowl, thus coating the popcorn in the water. Your seasonings will stick to the popcorn because it is lightly coated in water. Hope this helps! ?

Water might get popcorn soggy… but… steam? What if you were to put tiny amounts of water in the pan by rinsing the inside of the pan and not dry it out to leave tiny amounts of moisture that will turn to steam. Popcorn has a large surface area, so I’m not sure how well this idea would work. I don’t normally stick stuff on my popcorn or else I would try.

Spritz with a little spray olive oil then shake it up and enjoy!

We had the same problem and bought a pressurized hair mister and lightly mist the popcorn then add salt and nutritional yeast works like a charm!

What about sugar?

Not sure I understand the question..

I know in France, it is common practice to put sugar on popcorn instead of salt like americans do. Maybe this is what is being asked about. Or maybe Phifi just likes sugar on their popcorn.

As you’re pouring the popcorn into your bowl, alternate cooking spray with seasoning…do it over the sink, hahaha!

Or put your seasonings in the dry blender and blend until fine. The fine seasonings stick without oil. And put on as soon as possible after popping.

I tried this three times, and it didn’t seem to work at all. I got little tiny pops, and I ended with sad little half-popped, over-cooked kernels. Is it really supposed to be put in a pan with the heat on, and that’s it? Any time I make it with oil, it pops beautifully.

Yes.

I had the same problem with Adam. The popcorn kernels just burned without oil.

All you need to do is shake the pot every few seconds for the entire duration of popping.

I suggest editing the original post to include the instruction to hold the handles of the pot and shake it every few seconds until its done popping. This will avoid the problems people are getting.

Just realized I was out of coconut oil and searched for a solution… found this post and just tried it! Worked well enough, I got enough popcorn for my snack!

A few notes:
1. shake the pan as the corn pops
2. know that you will get smaller popcorn and more kernels

If you are prepared for that fact then you’ll be happy with the results!

You can pop popcorn in a cast iron skillet WITHOUT any oil, just keep tabs on it, and when the popping slows, shake, and then take it off the heat and remove. NO oil popcorn!

Thanks! I used Tri-Colored popcorn kernels from Sprouts and it worked great! Almost every kernel popped and no burning. I did pick up and shake the pan to keep the little guys from burning. Fantastic and delish. Thank you!

soak the popcorn for 10 minutes in salty water. then pop them. they will be fluffier and may taste saltier afterwards.
